A Tribute to Denis Kennedy

It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of one of our most loyal and respected clubmen, Denis Kennedy. His loss will be deeply felt by all who knew him.

Denis hailed from Clonroche, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford, where he lined out at midfield for his beloved Clonroche during a golden era of Wexford hurling.  He often spoke fondly of the fierce battles against the greats of Rathnure, Buffers Alley, and Cloughbawn, holding his own in the thick of it when legends like Art Foley, the Rackard brothers, and Nick O’Donnell were in their prime.

Denis became involved with St Gabriel’s in the mid-1970s and quickly became a cornerstone of the club. He was known for collecting lads from the Duke pub on Fonthill Road and the George Robey in Finsbury Park, ferrying them out to New Eltham for matches and training.  No matter how many needed a lift, seven or eight would squeeze into the car at times. Denis never turned anyone away and never once complained. Denis was a life president of St Gabriels and was honoured with a Hall of Fame award for his service to the club at the 60th Anniversary celebrations in 2022.

He worked with Tony Beach, a contractor from Dartford, and was instrumental in helping young Irishmen and hurlers find work in East London and Kent.  That quiet generosity was typical of Denis, who always looked out for others and was always willing to lend a hand.

For over four decades, Denis was a constant presence at St Gabriel’s. Rain, hail or shine, he rarely missed a training session or a match.  His dedication was second to none.

On his annual trips home to Ireland, Denis always made a special journey to Tipperary to visit JJ O’Brien in Cahir.  He’d spend hours in the shop, carefully selecting hurls for some of his favourite players, a small gesture that meant a great deal.  He also took great pride in repairing hurleys, a skill he honed over many years.  Many a broken hurl was brought back to life in Denis’s hands, each one carefully restored with the same dedication he brought to everything he did.

On behalf of the St. Gabriels Hurling Club, we extend our condolences to Denis’s wife, Mona, his sons, Mark and Robert, his daughter, Sinead, his cherished grandsons, as well as the extended Kennedy and Flavin families.

His funeral took place on  Tuesday, 5th August 2025, at  St Ignatius Catholic Church, Stamford Hill, London, N15 6ND.

Denis was laid to rest in Manor Park Cemetery & Crematorium, Serbert Road, London, E7 0NP
