St Gabriels 2-17 Robert Emmetts 2-11

Shane Lawless hit 2-4 from play to fire St Gabriels to their first county title in five years as they defeated Robert Emmetts at McGovern Park yesterday.

St Gabriels had fallen behind on 12 minutes after Brendan McCarry scored the first of his two goals, but Gabriels responded with an unanswered 1-4. Lawless’ first goal arrived on 17 minutes when he found the top corner.

Emmetts conceded the second goal in first-half injury time when Lawless beat goalkeeper Sean Ryan to a dropping ball.

That gave Gabriels a 2-10 to 1-6 interval lead, but it was cut to three points after the restart when Eoin Laverty’s pass across set up McCarry for his second major.

Dave Nolan’s free-taking saw Gabriels build a seven-point lead heading into the closing stages as Emmetts couldn’t muster a goalscoring chance and had half-back Denis O’Regan sent off in stoppage time before Lawless had the final say with a 65th-minute point.
